Q: What is the Medical Information Bureau (MIB)?

A: The MIB is an association of over 500 US and Canadian life insurance companies. The MIB primarily provides services to life insurance companies to prevent attempts to conceal or omit information that impacts life insurance underwriting.

"We give consumers a one stop shop for all their life insurance information needs."

The MIB is most known for their database of consumer information gleaned from the medical exams conducted by life insurance companies.

The MIB does not record the policy decisions of insurance companies (such as the denial of a policy). They do not contain details about a consumer's condition, only warning flags. These flags will remain in your report for seven years, or less if you successfully petition to have it removed or changed. The MIB database primarily contains medical information, although it may also contain information related to hazardous jobs or a poor driving history.

Consumers can request a copy of their MIB record directly from MIB for a $9.00 fee. Although you cannot request the record online, MIB does provide a form online that you can print out and either fax or mail. Go to http://www.mib.com for more information about the MIB and for the forms to request your record.

If you find something that is incorrect in your MIB record, you can ask to have it corrected.
