Life Insurance Advice: Checking the Results of a Medical Exam

Q: How do I check the results of my life insurance medical exam?

A: The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires that Insurance Companies tell you why they declined to offer you life insurance or placed you in a higher risk category.

"We give consumers a one stop shop for all their life insurance information needs."

However, this does not mean that the insurance company will automatically send you the results of your medical exam. You can request the results of your examination in writing from the life insurance company. They may also share the results of your exam with your doctor.

The life insurance company also shares the results of your exam with the Medical Information Bureau (MIB). That means that all life insurance companies will have access to the results of your life insurance medical exam. You can request a copy of your MIB Report to see what other insurance companies see. Learn more about the Medical Information Bureau.

Some state laws do impact what information the life insurance company can and can't share, although you should be able to request your report in just about every state.
