Q: What will the life insurance company check when I have my medical exam?

A: Life insurance companies may look for many different things when they give you an exam. The same insurance company may even check for different things with different people. The typical exam usually involves:

  • Physical Exam
    • Blood pressure
    • Waist measurements
    • Chest measurements (lungs full and lungs empty)
    • Other

  • Blood Sample
    • HIV check
    • Cholesterol level
    • Nicotine level
    • diabetes, hepatitis, antigens related to Prostate Cancer, immune disorders

  • Urine Sample
    • medications
    • cocaine and other drugs
    • other routine analyses

In some cases, and particularly for high amounts of life insurance ($2,500,000 and up) the exam may involve:

  • treadmill EKGs
  • chest and other X-Rays

The exact set of test you will be given differ by life insurance company, and certainly change with your current condition and the size of your policy.
